Hikers are rewarded on this 1.5-mile roundtrip trek with an opportunity to enjoy one of the Big Island’s picturesque beaches accessible only by foot.
The hike is situated along the island’s south shore near one of the few remaining working fishing villages, Milolii.
The trail begins just north of the parking lot at the “Honomalino Beach” sign.
The relatively flat and brief expedition takes travelers through rich forest land, past historic native sites and even passes through lava that originated from the Mauna Loa volcano thousands of years ago.
Upon reaching the beach, which is flanked by a thick grove of palm trees, visitors will notice the “salt-and-pepper” combination of black and white sand created by the area’s eroding lava rock and churned-up coral.
