Appropriately located on Hawaii Island where active lava flows still push toward the sea, Mauna Kea Golf Course was carved out of ancient lava paths by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1964.
The golfer’s paradise has consistently ranked among Golf Digest’s Top 100 since 1969 and serves up breathtaking views including those along the picturesque 265-yard over-the-ocean signature third hole. The par-3 spans from a cliff-side tee box across surging inlet waves and a rocky shoreline to the green, which is surrounded by seven treacherous bunkers.
The sand traps represent a consistent theme throughout the course, which features nearly 100 bunkers scattered across Mauna Kea’s standard-setting layout.
